Online classroom Edmodo - How it works and development cost

What is Edmodo?

What is Edmodo?

Edmodo is a California based technological education company that offers coaching, communication, and collaboration through its platform for K-12 students and teachers.

Their network allows teachers to distribute lessons, quizzes, assignments, etc. and also at the same time, allows seamless communication between parents, teachers, and students.

Edmodo was founded in 2008 by Jeff O'Hara, Nick Borg, and Crystal Hutter. The company has received funding from Learn Capital, Index Ventures, New Enterprise Associates, Greylock Partners, Union Square Ventures, Benchmark, and others. Since 2008, the company has gained popularity rapidly, and as of July 2019, the company claims to have over 100 million users.

Although the app is mainly popular in the USA with over 50 million users, it is also used by teachers and students from over 180 countries. Other major countries include Singapore, Uruguay, Indonesia, and Italy. The interesting thing about Edmodo is only 10% of the user base are teachers, which just proves how popular the app is among students.

Edmodo was among the 'The Top Apps for Teachers' list by PC Magazine in 2013. During this year, they acquired Root-1 intending to become the app store for education.  The following year, they released Snapshot, which is a set of tools to measure student progress compared to education standards. Edmodo was acquired by NetDragon in April 2018 for $137.5 million.

How does Edmodo work?

How does Edmodo work?

Edmodo is a free platform for social learning for students, teachers, and even parents. It allows students and teachers to connect and also analyze student performance. The student progress is evaluated using grades and stored in the database. Classes can also be set up using Edmodo. Teachers can hand out assignments, exams, suggestions, etc to students using Edmodo. Thus Edmodo is a platform for communication, assessment tracker, and a grade book all in one.

In a nutshell, Edmodo is an educational platform that utilizes the concepts of social networks and applies it for classrooms in a way that's appropriate and suited for learning. Everything that happens in Edmodo is transparent in the sense that all activities are transparent to the teacher. Thus there is no way of posting inappropriate content or students bullying other students. It is rather a platform for sharing ideas, getting help, and communicating between students and the teacher.

With the ability of parents to join the class with an invite from the teacher, it adds an extra level of sense and security as the parents can see how their kids are performing in the class. All in all, Edmodo provides a safe learning network that is free for all (they also have a premium service).

Here are some of the features provided by Edmodo:

  • Sign up for students, teachers, and parents
  • Teacher creating assignments
  • Teacher uploading documents
  • Discussion between class students
  • Evaluation of students by teachers
  • Class materials stored in 'The Backpack'
  • Ability to create groups
  • Collaboration between peers
  • Upload media files
  • Record absentees
  • Reward system based on student performance

Edmodo involves four entities - students, teachers, administrators, and parents. The administrators can create a community where they can add everyone and communicate with them. The students can communicate with each other and the teachers. They can submit their quizzes and assignments, and join various groups.

The parents can either log in as themselves or as their children. They can view their child's grades, work, and other activities. They receive feedback from the teachers on their child's performance and well being. The teachers assign quizzes, assignments, polls, etc. to students. They can upload documents, videos, images, and manage organizational features.

Edmodo can be accessed via its website and it is also available as a mobile app for both Android and Apple. We will list the development cost of both the website and the mobile app.
